Jordin Sparks v. Originality

October 24, 2009

If anyone out there is excited about the plethora of terrible albums that will be cluttering shelves by Christmas time as a result of this year’s X-Factor. Perhaps you should consider the consequences of such television. Haven’t you ever heard a Kelly Clarkson song?

Jordin Sparks is an unfortunate byproduct of American Idol. Her latest single sounds like Lady Gaga’s younger, less talented sister trying to sing while the person next door plays some 80s music very loudly. It’s best to keep out of Gaga country if you don’t expect to come up short in comparison.  The S.O.S. part is taken straight from a Gaga playbook.

It’s so desperately trying to be a Lady Gaga song that you are left surprised that Sparks isn’t dancing about in various states of undress wearing a Lady Gaga wig.  How many times have you read Lady Gaga so far? Are you sick of it yet? Ok, no more.

The chorus is even more derivative. A like for like sample of Shannon’s 1983 song ‘Let The Music Play‘ with nothing brought to the table. Sampling is a good thing if it’s done right. This is just someone else’s song with new bits added.

Sparks is a bit unusual, you can’t rely on her to be consistently awful like you can some musicians. ‘Battlefield‘ was a good song but ‘No Air‘ could easily be sold as an alternative to a sleeping pill, presumably it’s hard to breathe because Chris Brown is choking her. I guess that means she has something good in the works. Let’s hope so.

Who let you out and allow you to say such horrible things? Jordin Sparks CAN SING and her new and old CD has nothing but great tunes. You may not like S.O.S. (Let The Music Play) but the girl has vocals and very good vocals at that!! Why aren’t you writing about the vocals of, Taylor Swift, or Rihanna or even Miley? Then I would say you are not at least tone death, you jerk!

Dear me, you might want to take a few deep breaths before you start typing. Very little of that actually made sense. I’m sure Jordin Sparks isn’t bothered, why should you be?

For your information I worked for many years as a vocal coach so I think out of the two of us I am far better qualified to comment. Not that I expect you to be so considerate.
